UNHCR chief in solidarity with displaced Somalis during Eid il-Fitr

UNHCR chief António Guterres and Sweden's Minister for International Development Cooperation Gunilla Carlsson talk to displaced Somalis in Dollow, south-western Somalia.

As Muslims observe the three-day holiday of Eid il-Fitr marking the end of the fasting month of Ramadan, the head of the UN refugee agency (UNHCR) António Guterres is visiting the Horn of Africa.

Mr. Guterres is there to show solidarity with displaced Somalis.

UNHCR says that over the Eid period, it is airlifting aid from Saudi Arabia comprising special Eid packages which are ready to eat meals, orange juice and biscuits.

UNHCR spokesman, Adrian Edwards, says the agency's partner, Islamic Relief is distributing the packages to internally displaced people in Somalia.

"The goal remains to provide as much aid as possible within Somalia so that people affected by famine and conflict will not have to undertake the arduous journey to neighbouring countries in search of assistance and on which journeys we know that so many people are dying. While the Somali outflow into Ethiopia and Kenya has slowed, the camps continue to face challenges with recent arrivals."
