UN Rights expert urges Syria to stop attacking its citizens

Christof Heyns

One hundred people have died in the last 4 days as the crackdown by the Syrian government on its own people continues.

The death toll has now risen to over a thousand, says the Special Rapporteur on Extrajudicial, Summary and Arbitrary Executions.

Christof  Heyns says he is worried about the killings but also about the tactics used by the authorities to quell the on-going demonstrations.

Heyns says military equipment is being used against civilians, including tanks.

"Well, I think they should immediately cease using live rounds and using military equipment against civilian protestors. And of course — square but not only there other parts of the country as well. And then of course the political process needs to take its course because they have to solve the problems within their own country as well."

The UN Security Council has recently issued a presidential statement condemning the use of force and widespread human rights abuses against civilians in Syria.
