UN Chief condemns attack on UN office in Nigeria
UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has condemned Friday's attack on the United Nations main office in the Nigerian capital Abuja.
He has despatched the Deputy Secretary-General, Ms. Asha-Rose Migiro, to Nigeria immediately to the scene of a bomb blast..
Ms. Migiro was already in Africa for a Horn of Africa Pledging Conference in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.
Secretary-General Ban says he's mobilizing the UN system to respond to this emergency.
“These buildings house 26 humanitarian and development agencies of the United Nations family. This was an assault on those who devote their lives to helping others. We condemn this terrible act, utterly.”
Secretary-General Ban says Nigeria and international search and rescue teams have mobilized and are moving the wounded to hospitals and providing emergency aid.
A car laden with explosives detonated outside the United Nations main office blowing part of the concrete structure, killing at least 16 people and wounding several others.
