UN calls for protection of Iranian exiles in Iraq

Ad Melkert

Authorities in Iraq have been urged by the United Nations not to forcibly deport Iranian exiles currently living in Camp Ashraf.

The camp, situated in the eastern province of Diyala, houses members of a group known as the People's Mujahadeen of Iran.

Ben Malor reports.

The head of the UN Mission in Iraq (UNAMI) Ad Melkert repeated the UN's call for the proper treatment of the Iranian exiles in Camp Ashraf, during his farewell meeting with Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri Al-Maliki on Sunday.

The United Nations continues to advocate that Camp Ashraf residents be protected from forcible deportation, expulsion or repatriation. UNAMI has pledged its continued assistance to the government of Iraq in finding a peaceful and lasting solution to the issues of Camp Ashraf.

In April this year, an operation by the Iraqi army at Camp Ashraf left 30 people dead and dozens of others wounded.
