Syrian security forces launch assault on Latakia

The United Nations agency helping Palestinian refugees has expressed grave concern over reports that Syrian security forces have fired at a refugee camp in the country's northern port city of Latakia.

UNRWA spokesperson Chris Gunness says poor communications make it impossible to confirm the exact number of dead or injured.

The Syrian security forces are accused of using both warships and armoured vehicles to attack civilian demonstrators.

Mr. Gunness is calling on the Syrian authorities to allow humanitarian workers inside the area.

“We have made very clear to the Syrian authorities that there has to be humanitarian access so we can get in – tend to the sick, tend to the dying. Try to find out what is going on because any disproportion use of force or indiscriminate use of force is condemnable and it has to stop. And we have to have the proper access for our workers try to help this people who are clearly on desperate state.”

The protests in Syria are part of a broader wave of popular uprisings across the Middle East and North Africa since the start of the year.
