Somalis asked to pull together to feed the hungry

Augustine Mahiga

A senior United Nations official today appealed to Somalis inside and outside the country to help alleviate the suffering of those affected by the famine.

Augustine Mahiga is asking them to give as much as they can during the Holy Month of Ramadan to feed the hungry.

The Somali diaspora sends $2 billion dollars a year in aid.

Mahiga is asking Somalis abroad to increase the amount of money they send to their families and relatives.

"Somali people are known for their generosity and actually the diaspora has been sending assistance to their compatriots inside Somalia to the tune of two billion dollars a year. This time of the famine and the drought, I think that assistance even more needed than before."

People in the Somali diaspora can also appeal to their host countries to continue supporting the United Nations and other aid organizations who feed the famine affected populations, Mahiga adds.
