Security Council condemns violence in Syria

Hardeep Sing Puri

The Security Council has condemned the widespread violations and use of force against civilians by the Syrian authorities.

In a presidential statement issued by Hardeep Sing Puri, the Council members called for an immediate end to all violence in Syria and urged all sides to act with restraint.

The Council also expressed its profound regret at the death of many hundreds of people.

Puri says the Council was unanimous in its message.

"And this is incorporated in the statement in terms of the grave concern of the deteriorating situation, condemnation of the widespread violations of human rights and use of force against civilians. Calling for an immediate end to all violence and urging all sides to act with restraint, etc."

Lebanon, a member of the Council, has distanced itself from the statement.

The statement comes after three days of debate.
