Secretary-General outlines UN's top priorities

Ban Ki-moon

Sustainable development will remain the Secretary-General's top priority during his second term as the head of the United Nations.

Mr. Ban Ki-moon was speaking to Korean dignitaries and members of the diplomatic corps during an official visit in the capital, Seoul.

The General Assembly in June agreed to appoint Mr. Ban to a second consecutive term as Secretary-General.

Women and children's health is also on top of his list, says his spokesperson Farhan Haq.

"The Secretary-General also attended an event organized by the South Korean Red Cross and UNICEF to support children in Africa. He thanked famous young Korean entertainers who were present for backing the project and asked them to use their reach to raise funds and awareness."

Meanwhile, Ban says his immediate concern is the humanitarian crisis in the Horn of Africa.

12.4 million people in the region are dependent on food aid.
