Remote volatile towns in Darfur receive aid

United Nations humanitarian workers in Sudan's troubled Darfur region are on a week-long mission to distribute aid.

The joint UN-African Union peacekeeping mission or UNAMID says food, medical supplies and other relief items are being delivered to people living in the West of the mountainous Jebel Marra.

The town has been largely cut off from outside assistance because of fighting between government forces and rebels.

Oriano Micaletti of UNAMID says the mission is part of broader efforts to support aid agencies as they deliver assistance to these hard to reach areas.

Conflict has raged in Darfur since 2003.

An estimated 300,000 people have been killed and 2.7 million others are displaced.
