Remembering the late UN envoy Sérgio Vieira de Mello

Sérgio Vieira de Mello

Sérgio Vieira de Mello died in a terrorist attack in 2003 while on duty in Iraq's capital Baghdad after 40 years of humanitarian service.

The Canal Hotel bombing in Baghdad also claimed the lives of 22 UN staff members and wounded more than 150 people.

The top UN envoy in Iraq had been on assignment to numerous war-torn societies like Kosovo and East Timor and finally in Iraq where he became one of the first victims of a suicide bomb.

Pulitzer prize winner Samantha Powers wrote a book entitled "Chasing the Flame: Sérgio Vieira de Mello and the Fight to Save the World."

She spoke to Diane Bailey about his life, including his reluctance to take the position in Iraq.
