Peacekeeper dies in Darfur ambush

South African officers of the African Union-United Nations Hybrid Operation in Darfur (UNAMID) are pictured on patrol to Kambut village, near Kutum, Sudan.

One peacekeeper has died and another has been seriously wounded after an attack on their vehicle in South Darfur.

The two soldiers were serving in the joint African Union-United Nations Mission in Darfur or UNAMID.

The identity of the assailants is unknown.

Martin Nesirky says the mission's vehicle has been recovered.

"Their vehicle came under attack by unknown gunmen this morning in Duma Village, which is 37 kilometres northeast of Nyala in South Darfur. UNAMID personnel have been sent to assess the scene of the incident.”

Nesirky adds that the Sudanese police are helping to find the criminals.

These most recent killings occur little more than a month after a UNAMID peacekeeper was shot and killed in West Darfur.
