New initiative promotes sustainable tourism
As people around the world continue to travel for recreational, leisure or business purposes, international tourism is expected to reach 1.6 billion arrivals by 2020.
But what kind of imprint are travellers leaving on their destinations? Are tourists damaging the environment? Contributing to water pollution?
Angering local populations?
To answer these questions and more, the Global Observatories on Sustainable Tourism initiative was born.
Luigi Cabrini of the World Tourism Organization, who heads the programme responsible for the Observatories, explained to me what they are, how they monitor "destinations", or vacation spots, and why China is a trend-setter on this issue.
