Food theft in Somalia is being investigated

WFP food distribution

A possible theft of food aid has been uncovered in Somalia and is being investigated by the World Food Programme.

WFP says it is strengthening its monitoring and control of food supplies in the area.

Food sacks bearing the WFP stamp are reportedly being sold in the markets in the Somali capital of Mogadishu.

The Secretary-General's spokesman, Farhan Haq says lack of access to the territory because of security threats is a problem.

"Humanitarian supply lines remain highly vulnerable to looting, attack and diversion by armed groups. WFP condemns all parties who would use the desperation of the hungry in Somalia to block, attack, or divert life-saving humanitarian supplies for their own benefit".
