Five community leaders known as Sheiks have been granted amnesty by Sudanese authorities in the troubled region of Darfur.

The Sheiks, who were sheltering at the Community Policing Centre of the United Nations-African Union Mission in Darfur (UNAMID), returned to their homes on Monday.

They went to the centre in July last year following an outbreak of violence in the Kalma camp for internally displaced persons.

United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has welcomed the granting of amnesty to the Sheiks and urged community leaders and members of the camp to refrain from all acts of violence.
