Famine threatens millions of lives in Horn of Africa

• More than 12 million people in the Horn of Africa need urgent humanitarian assistance in the face of drought and famine. The UN humanitarian agency (OCHA) is warning that the situation is getting worse. The agency is also stressing the need to look into long- term solutions to the crisis in the region.

Mozambique wages a campaign against malaria

• Mozambique is working to wipe out malaria, which kills an estimated 600,000 people each year in Africa. Six million cases of the disease are reported annually in Mozambique. But in recent years, the country has helped to significantly reduce malaria deaths.

Migrants evacuated from conflict-torn Tripoli

IOM chartered boat in Libya

• A group of migrants trapped by fighting in the Libyan capital, Tripoli on Thursday boarded a boat to leave. Most of the migrants being evacuated by the International Organization for Migration (IOM) are Egyptians, Filipinos, Canadians, Algerians, Moroccans and an Italian. IOM says it is planning to evacuate more migrants from conflict-torn Tripoli.
