Famine spreads in Somalia while rebels continue to block food aid

Augustine Mahiga

The famine in Somalia appears to have spread to three more areas, bringing the total to five, according to the UN envoy for Somalia, Augustine Mahiga.

Mahiga says the affected areas are under the control of Al Shabab rebels, where access is restricted.

Al Shabab is a militant Islamist group in Somalia that is waging a war to overthrow the government.

The World Food Programme or WFP has been barred from operating in areas controlled by rebels.

Alice Kariuki spoke to Augustine Mahiga, who began by appealing to the Somali diaspora to send more money to their families and relatives inside the country.
