Investments in water could pay huge dividends in health: Green Economy Rpt.

Water demand is expected to outstrip supply by as much as 40 per cent within 20 years, the UN Environment Programme (UNEP) warns in a report released on Thursday.

The Green Economy Report, unveiled during the World Water Week conference in Stockholm, Sweden, is calling for investment in water.

Charles Appel reports.

Investing 0.16 per cent of global Gross Domestic Product (GDP) in the water sector could reduce water scarcity and improve people's lives, according to the Green Economy Report.

It says that such investment could cut by half the number of people without sustainable access to safe drinking water and basic sanitation in less than four years.

The report warns that currently, the failure to invest in water services and to collect, treat and reuse water efficiently is exacerbating water shortages in many parts of the world.
