6,000 Palestinians displaced by Syria fighting

Latakia

An estimated six thousand Palestinian refugees displaced by fighting in the Syrian port city of Latakia have been located.

Earlier in the week, the United Nations Relief and Works for Palestine Refugees or UNRWA had voiced concern over the well-being of these refugees after fighting took place in the area.

Syrian security forces reportedly used gun ships to shell the city last Sunday near a Palestinian refugee camp where 10,000 people were registered.

Farhan Haq, the spokesperson for the Secretary General, says UNRWA has established a temporary office outside the camp.

"The Agency has been able to assist the refugees with cash grants for food, medicine and accommodation. The staff report that many people, particularly the children and women, are traumatized and in poor condition".
