UN wants to investigate possible mass graves in Sudan's South Kordofan

Sudan's South Kordofan

The UN is hoping to send an assessment mission to Sudan's South Kordofan to check on reports of mass graves, but is unsure if the government will allow them access.

Ivan Šimonović, Assistant Secretary-General of the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights says reliable sources showing the existence of mass graves have come to light.

"Allegations are very disturbing, they include indiscriminate aerial attacks and shelling as well as abductions and extrajudicial killings. UN staff has also been targeted."

Sudan has endured decades of civil war and South Kordofan continues to be a flashpoint between the North and South Sudan, which is now independent.
