UN Special Rep visits Libya to talk transition with leaders

The Secretary-General’s special envoy for Libya has just returned from the country's capital Tripoli where he raised the idea of a peaceful transition with the government there.

The UN's special envoy to Libya, Abdul al-Khatib stressed the need for a political solution to the ongoing conflict with members of the government during his latest trip to the capital Tripoli.

Al-Khatib emphasized that a settlement must address the legitimate demands and aspirations of the people of Libya for a democratic future.

Libya has been engulfed by fighting since a pro-democracy movement opposed to the regime of Muammar al-Qadhafi emerged in February following similar protests in Tunisia, Egypt and other countries across North Africa and the Middle East.

Al-Khatib will brief the Security Council on his trip Monday.
