UN expert wants inquiry into Malaysian government crackdown on protesters

Frank La Rue

The UN Special Rapporteur on the right to freedom of opinion and expression wants to conduct an inquiry into the Malaysian governments violent response to demonstrators demanding free and fair elections.

On Saturday security authorities used tear gas and water cannons on peaceful protestors, reportedly leading to one death and scores of injuries.

They also arrested more than 1,600 people at the rally.

Frank La Rue says the Malaysian government risks undermining democratic progress.

"I think the time is right to have an inquiry mission to Malaysia and I am going to ask the government to officially invite me to come as Rapporteur because I would like to do full research and report on this and make recommendations on how to avoid future conflict."
