Voters are being given the chance to pick the best advertising campaign to promote awareness in Europe about the battle to defeat gender-based violence.

The United Nations has opened online voting for the "VOTE to Say No – UNiTE to End Violence against Women" contest.

More than 2,700 entries from 40 European countries – prepared by both creative professionals and ordinary members of the public – have been submitted.

According to the UN, up to 70 per cent of women have experienced violence at some point in their lives.

Frederik Bordon is with the UN Information Centre in Brussels, where the contest is being run.

"Participants have been very creative in trying to tackle this problem and raising awareness about the problem in Europe also looking at the problem from different perspectives meaning that it is also an issue that concerns different age groups from youth and is something that has to start from the root."

Voting ends 31 July. The website is http://competition.create4theun.eu/
