Worldwide Supermodel Alek Wek of newly independent South Sudan recently participated in a United Nations event focusing on young people. The two-day high-level meeting, which hosted representatives from 400 youth groups, was in connection with International Youth Year. Ms. Wek spoke with Darrin Farrant on the conference theme, “Youth: Dialogue and Mutual Understanding.” She drew on her own experience as a young girl who had escaped civil war in her home town of Wau.

World Breastfeeding Week 2011 has communication as its theme

"Talk to me! Breastfeeding – A 3D Experience" is the catchy theme for World Breastfeeding Week 2011, taking place from August 1st to the 7th. Dr. Maria del Carmen Casanovas of the World Health Organization briefed me on some of the long-term benefits of the practice for babies. She also talked about breastfeeding in times of disaster.

Liberia's peace huts are bringing justice to women

Liberian women gather inside a "peace hut", a women-run community court serving to resolve domestic disputes and dispense informal justice.

For 14 years, Liberia in West Africa was shattered by a bloody civil war. By 2003 it was officially over, but according to the United Nations, the legacy of violence continues. Today, sexual violence rates remain high, with about 40 percent of rape victims being under the age of 12. In this UN TV report, we hear how Liberian women are seeking justice for rape victims through what they call "peace huts".
