There is "strong evidence" that atrocities such as mass killings are being carried out by Sudanese forces in the Southern Kordofan region.

That's what some UN human rights experts say and they are calling for an immediate investigation.

Gay McDougall, the Independent Expert on minority issues said she is worried about reports that people of Nuban descent have been killed because of their ethnicity. She says if true, it would constitute a war crime and crime against humanity.

Ivan Šimonovic, the Assistant Secretary-General for Human Rights, had also said the UN received "very disturbing" reports from Southern Kordofan that include indiscriminate aerial attacks, shelling, abductions, extrajudicial killings and mass graves in fighting between Government forces and members of the Sudan People's Liberation Army (SPLA).
