South Sudan to become 193rd member of UN

Security Council Chamber

The UN Security Council has recommended South Sudan for membership of the world body.

The full General Assembly would then vote to make the new nation the 193rd member of the UN.

South Sudan officially declared independence from Sudan July 9 after decades of civil war between the two countries.

However, there is still insecurity in the boarder regions. One of which, Abyei, still has to decide whether to secede with South Sudan or stay with the north.

The council is set to discuss that as well.
