South Sudan must keep the peace with its northern neighbour

People show their euphoria, as the Republic of South Sudan proclaims its independence.

After the euphoria following South Sudan's declaration of independence on 9 July, the world's newest nation has many challenges ahead.

That's according to Hilde Johnson, the head of the UN Mission in South Sudan.

Maintaining peace with its northern neighbour, Sudan, which it seceded from, is one of the critical challenges that the new Republic will have to face.

Nation building is another, Johnson adds.

"The second major challenge of course is building the new state, nation building, state building, state institutions that are a solid foundation for the country. That's a critical second challenge. A third one is the huge developmental challenges that are in South Sudan."
