South Sudan celebrates independence

The people of South Sudan have been celebrating independence and the formation of the world's newest nation.

The new country's flag was raised at a ceremony in the capital Juba on Saturday morning.

South Sudan became independent after a referendum in January in which the south voted unanimously to separate from the north of Sudan.

The referendum was part of a peace process which brought an end to a decades long conflict with the north.

Joe Contreras is a public information officer for the UN mission in Sudan.

He's been speaking to Daniel Dickinson about the celebrations.
