Piracy spreads past the coast of Somalia

Mary Seet-Cheng

Pirates are extending their area of operations past the coast of Somalia, increasing their use of pirated vessels as mother ships and using high levels of violence.

Ambassador Mary Seet-Cheng from Singapore, who heads the contact group on piracy, says despite the best efforts of the international community, piracy continues to be a threat to international shipping and sea farers.

"Although the number of ships and crew members held hostage have dipped slightly since the last contact group meeting in March 2011, we understand that much work remains to be done in terms of eradicating the threat of piracy."
