Once-daily pill helps prevent HIV infection

Daily pill helps prevent HIV/AIDS infection

A pill aimed at reducing the risk of acquiring HIV has shown promising results with 73% of HIV-negative people tested not catching the virus.

Two studies involving heterosexual couples in Africa where one partner is infected with HIV and the other is not, shows that the risks of transmission reduced for both men and women.

33 million people in the world have HIV and the majority live in Africa and Asia.

The Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS, UNAIDS says this pill could be a new "tool" to help slash HIV infections by half by 2015.

Catherine Hankins, UNAIDS Chief Scientific Advisor spoke to Jocelyne Sambira about the significance of this find.
