NATO members look for Libya solution during meeting

Abdel Al-Khatib

Libya will be on the agenda when NATO members meet Friday in Istanbul, Turkey.

The Libya contact group meeting includes officials from more than 40 nations and the UN involved in the operation. They will be discussing the UN resolution to protect civilians, which gave NATO the authority to use aerial bombings in the country.

Libyan rebels have been fighting to oust leader Muammar Qadhafi. The Secretary-General's special representative to Libya, Abdel Al-Khatib says while negotiations are underway a solution is still a long way off.

"We are trying to encourage both parties to respond to our ideas about certain ways to handle the situation – to agree to a ceasefire, to agree on a political transitional process. People are conducting these talks with the UN, so we're going back and forth between them, listening to their reviews and encouraging them to engage on a more sustainable basis with us."
