Lebanon-Israel ceasefire holding up “very well”

Security Council chamber

Despite tensions, the Lebanon-Israel ceasefire that ended the conflict in 2006 is holding up “very well” according to the Special Coordinator of the Secretary-General for Lebanon.

Michael Williams told the UN Security Council that the arrangements put in place by resolution 1701 have contributed to preserving stability and containing tensions in the area, despite some flare-ups.

But he also said if a real ceasefire is to happen, major issues need to be addressed.

"There is I think a need for both parties, Lebanon and Israel, to recommit to 1701 against a background which frankly may be more difficult in the coming months — if not difficult, certainly challenging. I'm thinking in particular of the absence of a peace process between Israel and the Palestinians."
