Restoring law and order to Cote d'Ivoire is key to getting the country on track as it rebuilds from conflict following a contested Presidential election.

The former president Laurent Gbagbo refused to cede power to the winner of presidential elections, a stand-off which led to months of internal conflict.

YJ Choi, the Secretary-Generals Special Representative for Côte d'Ivoire told the Security Council in New York that the West African country faces four major challenges including the restoration of law and order, national reconciliation, holding elections and economic recovery.

"All these efforts related to the four tasks appear to be moving toward the right direction. However, there is a need for rapid restoration of law and order throughout the country as this a precondition for the other tasks to be carried out successfully."
