Increasing capacity to produce vaccines is key to averting influenza pandemics

Influenza vaccines

The world is still unprepared for a major influenza pandemic.

The World Health Organization (WHO) says drug manufacturers and governments need to increase their capacity to produce influenza vaccines.

The WHO's Global Vaccine Action Plan aims to increase the supply of a pandemic vaccine and reduce the gap between potential demand and supply anticipated during such a pandemic.

Dr Harvey Fineberg is Chair of the International Health Regulations Review Committee.

"The world is ill prepared for a major pandemic. It's ill prepared in good measure because we do not currently have the capacity to produce in a timely way sufficient vaccine to protect the world's population in the face of a global severe influenza pandemic."
