"Enormous" challenges ahead for new state of South Sudan

Ban Ki-moon in Juba

South Sudan is faced with enormous challenges as a newly independent state according to the Secretary-General of the United Nations.

The country has split from its northern neighbour, the Republic of Sudan, following decades of conflict between the north and south of the country.

Speaking at the independence ceremony held on Saturday in the capital, Juba, Ban Ki-Moon said there were many challenges ahead.

"The challenges are enormous. Security is still unstable. There is a huge lack of infrastructure. There are huge socio-economic problems and the rule of law. You have to have all of these things established as soon as possible. The United Nations will mobilize all resources possible. Agencies stand ready to work with the new Sudanese government leaders and people."
