At the Save the Children-supported Mobile Health and Nutrition Emergency Programme screening in Bisle kebele, Shinile zone, ERC Amos met pastoralist communities who have not seen rain in 18 months. Malnutrition is increasing.

Ethiopia, along with other countries in the region is experiencing a devastating drought.

Valerie Amos, Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Relief Coordinator, says as of June an estimated 3.2 million people were receiving food assistance throughout Ethiopia and increase of 400,000 from February to April of this year.

Amos says today the government announced new figures of 4.56 million people requiring food and other assistance.

"It's clear that the effects of this drought are going to last for at least the rest of this year and the situation in drought affected areas is expected to worsen. The need to do more now is urgent, but in addition we also need to plan for the longer term."
