Cote d'Ivoire's former president investigated over civilian deaths

International Commission of Inquiry investigates alleged killings

Former Côte d'Ivoire president Laurent Gbagbo is under investigation for the deaths of hundreds of civilians in his country, following disputed elections there.

Gbagbo clung to power through force even though he was voted out of office in November.

He was taken into custody in May and has been under the protection of the UN.

The United Nations special envoy for Côte d'Ivoire, YJ Choi, says that evidence is being gathered by the Ivorian authorities, as well as the International Criminal Court (ICC) to support the investigation.

"The ICC has already sent a preliminary mission to Côte d'Ivoire. I met the delegation. And they made it very clear that it is a preliminary fact-finding mission."

Choi also says he is stepping down as special envoy and has asked the Secretary-General to appoint a successor.
