The former South African leader, who is celebrating his 93rd birthday is one of the reasons Apartheid ended in that country.

He spent 67 years of his life in the service of others. The "Take Action! Inspire Change" campaign asks each person for 67 minutes of public service.

UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said UN staffers in New York are helping out in Central Park for the day.

"Together, we can help people achieve the dignity that are their birthright. That is the best way to wish Nelson Mandela a very happy 93rd birthday, and it is the best way we can thank him for being such an inspiration to us all."
