“Build inclusive societies” in age of global emigration, says Ban

Ban Ki-moon

Five billion people will be living in the world's major cities by 2030.

Many of them will be migrants or minorities looking for economic opportunities and freedom.

UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said the world could learn a valuable lesson from Italy having been both a recipient of migrants and a country of emigration.

He was in Italy for an international conference on the Inter-Ethnic City in Rome.

"This is an era where people are crossing borders in ever-increasing numbers in pursuit of opportunity and hope for a better life. Cities are the main centres of action – the hubs, the magnets, the places where people collide and coexist."

Mr. Ban was also present to celebrate the 150th anniversary of Italy's unification where met with senior officials.
