The Abyei region of Sudan is being described as a territory in “utter devastation” by the UN Deputy High Commissioner for Human Rights.

Kyung-wha Kang, who was just visited the disputed oil-rich region is calling for a thorough human rights investigation both there and in South Kordofan.

Meanwhile, on Monday the UN Security Council ordered 4,200 peacekeepers to Abyei to try and quell tensions ahead of southern Sudan’s independence from the north.

The region has been the focus of fighting between the two sides and still has to vote on which country it is to belong to.

Paul Omalla spoke with Ms Kyung-wha Kang about the situation there following her visit.
