UNESCO names actor Forest Whitaker Goodwill Ambassador

Forest Whitaker

Actor and director Forest Whitaker has been named Goodwill Ambassador for Peace and Reconciliation for the United Nations’ educational, scientific and cultural body, UNESCO.

His duties will include helping to educate people and mobilize governments in favour of youth programmes surrounding peace, education, human rights and global citizenship.

"I have very big hopes. Very big hopes because I have met a number of really amazing people here who are trying really to advance humanity and to move us forward. And so my hope is that there is a number of programmes to mobilize youth, to empower youth, to educate youth.”

Whitaker won an Oscar for his portrayal of Ugandan dictator Idi Amin in "The Last King of Scotland" and also made the film "Better Angels" about Ugandan child soldiers.
