Drug trafficking continues to pose a major challenge to the security of Guinea Bissau, according to the Secretary-General's Special Representative in the country.

Briefing the Security Council, Joseph Mutaboba said the local authorities need to demonstrate a firmer commitment and determination to curb crime.

However, Mutaboba said the political climate is improving although more reforms are needed.

"The context in Guinee Bissau is mixed on the one hand, the political and security situation is improving but on the other hand the economic reforms are yet to be sustained by other key reforms notably in the defence and justice sector. Without justice reforms we will always have problems."

The UN Integrated Peacebuilding Office in Guinea Bissau, UNIOGBIS, is helping the country recover from a civil war in which thousands were killed, wounded or forced from their homes.
