UN refugee agency condemns deportation of alleged rape victim

United Nations refugee agency (UNHCR) headquarters

The forced return of a Libyan national, Eman Al Abeidi, by Qatar back to Libya has been condemned by the United Nations Refugee Agency (UNHCR).

The agency says that it has recognized Ms. Al Abeidi as a refugee so her forced return to Libya violates international law.

Jocelyne Sambira reports.

A Libyan woman in exile who claims she was raped by soldiers loyal to Muammar Qadhafi has been forcibly deported.

Eman Al Abeidi was staying in the Middle Eastern country of Qatar after the ordeal where she was recognized as a refugee by UNHCR.

UNHCR officials were present at the hotel where she was staying, ready to accompany her to the airport to travel to an emergency transit centre in Romania.

However, the Qatari authorities prevented her from leaving for the flight to Romania and transported her against her will to Benghazi in Libya.
