An independent investigation into the death of unarmed civilians during anti-government protests in Syria has been demanded by senior United Nations officials.

Francis Deng, the Secretary-General's Special Adviser on the Prevention of Genocide, and Edward Luck, the Special Adviser on the Responsibility to Protect are condemning the Syrian government's use of live fire, tanks and artillery on demonstrators.

The advisors say the attacks seem to deliberately target civilians.

Vannina Maestracci is the UN’s Associate Spokesperson.

"The Secretary-General's Special Advisers on the Prevention of Genocide and the Responsibility to Protect have expressed their grave concern at the increasing loss of life in Syria as a result of the continued violent suppression of anti-Government protests. The Advisers are particularly alarmed at the apparently systematic and deliberate attacks by police, military and other security forces against unarmed civilians taking part in protests over the past two months".

The UN experts underscore the need to look into the "possible violations of international human rights law" taking place in Syria.
