UN expert urges Mexican "state of emergency" to battle obesity

Olivier De Schutter

Obesity in Mexico is at an all time high with 7 out of 10 adults overweight or obese.

The UN Special Rapporteur on the right to food is calling for a "state of emergency" in Mexico to battle obesity but also food poverty.

Olivier De Schutter, who just got back from visiting Mexico says if the country changes its agricultural policies, it could tackle the two problems simultaneously.

On suggestion he made, existing food aid programmes should source more of their food supplies from small-scale, local producers to increase their incomes and to ensure the provision of fresh foods to consumers.
