The importance of preventing violence against women has been underlined by the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, Navi Pillay.

Ms Pillay was speaking in Geneva as the UN Human Rights Council started its annual discussion of women's human rights.

She said that in its in-depth study of violence against women, the United Nations defines three levels of prevention.

"These are primary prevention, that is stopping violence before it occurs; secondary prevention which corresponds to the immediate response after violence has to limit its extent and consequences and tertiary prevention, the longer term care and support for those who had suffered violence.”
