UN celebrates 50 years of space technology

The United Nations is celebrating five decades of progress in outer space.

It's also marking the 50th anniversary of the first human spaceflight ship piloted by the late Yuri Gargarin from Russia to orbit into space.

Since then, the United Nations' Permanent Committee on the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space has developed five treaties and five principles governing the use of outer space.

It has also helped States develop their indigenous capabilities to use space technology for sustainable development.

Some of the tools used on a daily basis are satellites for communication, global navigation systems and Earth observation technologies.

The space technology has also helped with weather forecasting, environmental protection, and humanitarian assistance.
