UN calls for humanitarian access to South Kordofan in Sudan

• Sudan's leaders are being urged to allow aid workers access to thousands of people displaced by fighting in the Southern Kordofan state. The UN says authorities have limited their movements in the region. To make  matters worse, food and medical supplies meant for those in dire need have been looted from warehouses run by UN agencies.

Day of African Child focuses on 50 million orphans

• The International Day of the African Child is focusing on the plight of 50 million orphans in Sub-Saharan Africa. UNICEF says that these children are often exposed to violence and exploitation. Michael Klaus, UNICEF's regional Chief of Communication in East and Southern Africa tells Jocelyne Sambira that there are a lot of street children in Africa.

Africa needs to give more blood

• Many people in Africa still die of preventable deaths because blood stocks are so low. World Blood Donor Day observed on 14 June is reinforcing the need for more people to donate blood. Jean-Baptiste Tapko of the World Health Organization says Africa needs to do more to encourage blood donations.
