The Government of Sudan has reached agreement with the northern arm of the Sudan People's Liberation Movement (SPLM) to end the violence in the Blue Nile and Southern Kordofan states.

The UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon welcomes the accord signed in Ethiopia's capital Addis Ababa late on Tuesday.

Fighting in the two states along the country's north-south border has recently displaced over 73,000 civilians.

The warring parties have agreed to form a joint political committee and to work on a cease-fire to allow access to those displaced from the fighting.
