Security Council pushes Somali leaders to unite

Noël Nelson Messone

The UN Security Council is reminding Somali leaders that they have an obligation to end the political in-fighting and conflict that has devastated the Horn of Africa country.

The 15 member body Council is renewing its call for Somalia's Transitional Federal Government (TFG) and the opposition Alliance for the Re-liberation of Somalia (ARS) to honour the Djibouti Peace Agreement signed in 2008.

Ambassador Noël Nelson Messone of Gabon is the Security Council President.

"The Security Council reiterates the primary responsibility of Somalis to achieve peace, security and reconciliation in Somalia. It recalls that targeted measures can be imposed on those that engage in or provide support for acts that threaten the peace, security or stability of Somalia."
