Ratko Mladic

The former Serbian army commander Ratko Mladic has dismissed the charges against him as "obnoxious' and "monstrous".

He appeared for the first time before the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia on Friday for crimes of genocide, crimes against humanity and war crimes related to the Bosnian war in the early 1990s.

Mr. Mladic declined to enter a plea after citing his failing health and his need to consult with his lawyers.

Frederick Swinnen, Special Adviser to the Prosecutor at the tribunal told Derrick Mbatha that the former Serb commander is being held at the United Nations detention facilities in The Hague.
